Did Your Team Just Win Big? Here’s What You Need to Know About Paying Tax on Sports Betting.
Did you know that 118 million people bet on sports each year?
Sports betting gives savvy gamblers an opportunity to collect cash while their favorite players collect trophies.
You don’t have to drop by a casino or a race track to bet on sports, either. Gamblers can take home winnings after fantasy football games, office parties, and Saturday night poker.
That cash isn’t necessarily free and easy, however. Gambling winnings, just like any other income, are taxed in the United States.
If you raked in gold last year for sports betting, keep reading. In this post, we discuss everything you need to know about paying tax on sports betting.
    What is Sports Betting?
Sports betting is a form of gambling. It allows sports fans to bet on who they think will win a tournament, game, or race.
Naturally, gamblers put down cash when placing these wagers. These wagers can vary from a few pennies to thousands of dollars.
“Winners” cart home cash, often a percentage or total of all bets placed on a specific team, player, or participant.
You don’t have to visit a racetrack or basketball court to engage in sports betting. A lot of bets occur informally. For example, you and your friends may bet on March Madness results from the comfort of your own living room!
This is because sports betting hasn’t always been technically legal in the U.S. It’s been around for centuries, but it hasn’t enjoyed the hazy legality that gambling institutions like casinos have enjoyed for quite some time.
In fact, until May 2018, only four states in America permitted sports gambling: Montana, Delaware, Nevada, and Oregon.
The Supreme Court gave states the right to legalize sports betting in 2018. Since then, quite a few have come on board. Sports betting is now legal in West Virginia, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
Nonetheless, while sports betting is illegal in a large portion of the U.S., this doesn’t get you off the hook of paying taxes. Whether or not your state permits betting, you’re still eligible to pay taxes on any income acquired through gambling means.
If you are living in a state where it’s legal to bet on sports, it’s especially important to follow tax rules when reporting winnings.
How Much Tax Do I Have to Pay on Sports Betting?
You’re a regular at the racetrack and a natural at predicting World Open results. So how much tax do you have to pay in consequence?
    Taxable Winnings.
The IRS classifies all gambling winnings as taxable income–whether or not these winnings were earned legally. Such income can come from raffles, lotteries, horse races, and casinos.
The IRS doesn’t mention sports betting on its website, but these do count as gambling winnings.
Any cash winnings or prizes (such as vehicles or vacations) also count, assessed at their “fair market value.”
How to Pay Taxes on Sports Betting.
If you’ve earned your winnings at a gambling facility, that facility will actually issue you a tax form for those winnings at the start of tax season. However, this only happens if you win $600 or more (or if you’ve won at least 300 times at that facility).
You’ll also receive said form–Form W2-G–if you cart home at least $1,200 from a slot machine and $1,500 from keno.
And if you really bring home the bacon, earning at least $5,000 for sports betting, this definitely goes on your tax record.
If you receive cash from a sports betting facility, you will receive a total that already has taxes taken out of it. Facilities are required to withhold 24% of your earnings for federal withholding tax.
You will see this spelled out in your W2-G when tax time rolls around. However, if you receive off-the-record winnings, these are still taxable.
You will have to report them as other income when filing your taxes, and these will be taxed along with the rest of your income according to your filing status and tax bracket.
You may also have to pay state income tax on your sports betting cash, depending on where you live.
    Claiming Sports Betting Losses.
It may be possible to report any sports betting losses. So, if you had a bad night last week at the stadium, don’t worry.
Sports betting losses are tax-deductible, but under very specific conditions. The most important of these conditions is that you can’t claim losses that total more than your gains.
So, if you lost $5,000 on sports betting last year but took home $7,000 in the end, you’d be able to deduct all of those losses. If you lost $15,000 on sports betting but took home $5,000, you would only be able to deduct $5,000 of your lost bets.
Tips for Reporting Sports Betting Income.
You may be tempted to withhold your sports betting cash from Uncle Sam, especially if you won it informally (i.e., outside of a gambling facility).
However, failing to report taxable income on your tax return (via Form 1040) can result in severe penalties. Some of these include serious jail time, on top of relevant fees.
You may also be subject to an IRS audit at any time.
For this reason, we strongly recommend keeping a diary or journal of your sports betting wins and losses. You can do this on your phone, a notepad, whatever is most convenient for you.
In your notes, you should be recording:
The Type of Gambling The Date Your Gains (Wins) Your Losses The Location The People You’ve Bet With Attach/Hold onto any Relevant Forms or Receipts Detailing Cash Transactions.
Claiming your gambling losses can also help you minimize how much of your sports betting earnings you give back to Uncle Sam.

All Of Your Sports Betting Questions Answered Following Supreme Court Decision.
The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a ban on sports betting this week, opening the possibility of states legalizing and regulating such gambling.
Gambling has been around for centuries and sports betting grew in the 20th century in the United States. Many turned to their bookies or Las Vegas to place wagers, but in recent years offshore websites have made it simple to place a bet.
But sports betting is about to get a makeover as states look to make it legal stateside and reap the tax benefits.
While sports betting isn't legal in Connecticut, it soon could be which raises a number of questions. Let's take a look at what happened and what's next:
Q: Wait, what? I thought sports betting was illegal.
A: It was illegal in all states outside of Las Vegas. A federal law in 1992 effectively banned states from legalizing sports betting. And another federal law in 2006 cracked down on the use of offshore betting websites. Of course, people (and companies) were able to find loopholes and continued to find ways of placing bets.
    Connecticut.
Then came the state of New Jersey, which challenged that 1992 law (known as the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) and on Monday it won. The Supreme Court ruled that PASPA is in violation of the 10th Amendment.
Q: So can I start placing bets?
A: Slow down. This might take some time, especially in Connecticut. Local lawmakers knew a decision was coming, but weren't quite sure what it would say.
The decision allows states to legalize and regulate sports betting as they see fit. The Supreme Court decision also allows Congress to regulate sports gambling — something the NFL is hoping they will at least weigh in on — but if Congress doesn't, the states can do as they please.
    College Sports.
That will take time though. Connecticut lawmakers passed legislation last year directing state regulators to start drawing up the rules and regulations should the Supreme Court rule as it did. But those regulators came back with questions.
Lawmakers had another chance to pass regulations, but didn't act and the legislative session ended in early May. Another session doesn't start until 2019, but Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Democrats on Monday said they are ready to call a special session that would allow for debate and possible passage of the legalization of sports betting in Connecticut.
Even then, sports betting could be months or maybe even a year away from being legal here.
Q: Are there sports I can and can't bet on once (if) it becomes legal?
A: Again, Connecticut will likely regulate what you can and can't bet on. But expect for major sports — football, basketball, baseball, hockey, some auto racing, golf, combat sports — to all be allowed when it comes to betting.
There are some possible issues, however. Major League Baseball, for example, has concerns about gambling on minor league baseball. They argue that betting on that level could lead to the compromising of games or be subject to influence due to the low pay of the minor leaguers. Sorry, Hartford Yard Goats diehards looking for a piece of action.
Sports leagues have also expressed concern over some prop betting.
It's expected that the betting allowed will be on games, over-unders, teasers, some prop betting, and parlays. Plenty of discussion will continue about in-game betting, as well.
    Q: How can I place a bet?
A: Good question. That remains unclear, but there are plenty of possibilities.
Again, it will be up to the states to decide that. They could limit gambling to off-track betting parlors or casinos, but it's expected to be a little easier than that. There's a good chance it will be as simple as opening an app on your phone or sitting in a local restaurant or bar and being able to place a wager. Maybe it will be like grabbing a lotto ticket at the gas station, but that will be for the state to decide.
Q: And the pro sports leagues are OK with this?
A: Like the states, they see an opportunity. Betting has been a part of sports for a long time, the leagues just want to make sure when it's legalized that it's done so with the integrity of the game intact.
The NBA and MLB are most in favor, with the NHL following and the NFL asking that Congress be involved.
But there is ample opportunity for the leagues to make a cut. As proposed, the leagues would take a fraction of 1 percent of all bets placed and pocket it.
    Q: What about the NCAA?
A: While the NCAA has been opposed to sports gambling for years, it might be time for change.
They issued a statement Monday stating they "will adjust to sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court."
UConn's senior associate athletic director Neal Eskin testified last month in front of a legislative committee that UConn and the NCAA have concerns about the integrity of sports should there be wagering, especially with amateur athletes being involved.
Eskin also pointed to NCAA regulations that prevents championship games from being held in states where sports betting is legal. Connecticut, for example, will host opening rounds of the NCAA men's basketball tournament next year. That rule, however, could be changed by the NCAA.
Q: Who stands to profit in sports gambling?
    A: Just about everybody.
The pro leagues will likely be able to take a cut of each wager made. The states will do the same and use it toward their budgets, counting the percentage as revenue. In Connecticut, it's expected to count for tens of millions in revenue each year.
After that, the companies taking in bets will make plenty. That could mean casinos, the company that runs mobile apps or a restaurant should they be allowed to take bets.
Beyond that, use your imagination to determine just how much advertising there will be out there, analysis in the media, new apps that will suggest bets and more.

How to read Super Bowl 55 Odds.
The Kansas City Chiefs wil meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 7, 2021.
The Chiefs opened as -3.5 betting favorites while the Buccaneers are 3.5 underdogs.
After early wagers came in, most operators are holding Kansas City -3 (-120).
If you were to wager on Kansas City -3, you would have to lay 5/6 odds (Bet $120 to win $100) instead of your normal 10/11 juice (Bet $110 to win $100).
The return on Tampa Bay would be even-money (1/1) and a $100 wager would return $100.
The total or over-under on Super Bowl 55 is hovering between 56 and 57 points.
How to read NFL Las Vegas Odds.
The point-spread was developed to provide a balance for both teams involved in a contest to entice bettors to potentially back the weaker team and receive points. The two squads in a game are listed with a title, either a favorite or an underdog. The favorite is usually the perceived better team in the game, as backing them means giving up several points.
Ex. Bet $110 to win $100 (10% juice) Ex. Bet $100 to win $90.91 (10% juice)
It's not uncommon to see other values posted other than -10. Examples seen on the NFL Vegas Odds pages could include -08 , -12 , -15 and -20 . The -10 price is the most common value in the industry while many books offer reduced 'juice odds' and that would fall into the -08 category.
The lower-juice sportsbooks are normally found outside of the state Nevada. If you are in a state where sports betting is legal, please check out our online sportsbook directory to find the best and most secure places to make NFL bets.
Another number that’s posted on the NFL Las Vegas is the total or ‘over/under’ for the specific matchup. If the favorite is designated as the home team, then the total will be listed above and vice versa if the visitors are favorites.
All of the above numbers are listed next to the teams, and before each matchup is a Rotation number. The NFL Las Vegas Odds are listed in order of rotation and those numbers are generated and produced by the sportsbooks. Above each matchup and rotation is the Time of the game, which is subject to change. All game times are Eastern Standard Time.
    NFL Open Line.
One of the best features on the NFL Vegas Odds is the Open Line. This numbers consists of the first betting line received from one of our Las Vegas or Global Sportsbooks. The opening line varies depending on the sportsbook but it provides a clear-cut rating that the oddsmakers use. If you’re betting on the NFL or any other sport, it’s a great idea to view the open line first.
    VI Consensus NFL Line.
How do I bet on the Super Bowl?
We know that you can bet on the Super Bowl and all of NFL Futures or bet on the NFL Draft at any time of the year, but what’s the process? The future wager or the “Odds to Win” bet on the Super Bowl is correctly selecting a team to win an event that takes place at a later time. A bettor will have his wagered money tied up until there is an outcome and bettors will receive fixed odds when they place the wager. In the case of the Super Bowl, you’re not a winner or loser until you see zeros on the clock in the final game.
Most sportsbooks offer different ways to read to Super Bowl Odds. In the fractional NFL Futures Odds format below, you simply take the odds and multiply by the amount wagered.
Ex. Green Bay (8/1) to win the Super Bowl.
The Packers are listed as an 8/1 betting choice to win the Super Bowl. If you wager $100 on Green Bay to win the NFC and they capture the championship, then you would win $800 (8 Г· 1 x 100). Your online betting account would then credit your account $900, which includes your win and stake ($100).
If you are in a state where online betting is legal, we encourage you to check out our sportsbook directory to find the most trustworthy and reputable sites and mobile apps to place your Super Bowl bets.

Chiefs vs. Buccaneers odds, line, spread: NFL picks, 2021 Super Bowl predictions from top model on 120-78 run.
SportsLine's advanced computer model simulated Buccaneers vs. Chiefs in Super Bowl LV 10,000 times.
With nine Super Bowl appearances, Tom Brady owns many of the records for the NFL's biggest game. However, with just one previous Super Bowl title under his belt, Patrick Mahomes has the opportunity to make one of those marks his own. The 25-year-old can surpass Brady as the youngest quarterback with two championship rings when the Kansas City Chiefs take on Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 on Sunday. Kickoff from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
Mahomes, who led Kansas City (16-2) to a victory over San Francisco in Super Bowl 54, is also trying to become the sixth player to win multiple Super Bowl MVP honors. Brady is making the 10th Super Bowl appearance of his career but first with Tampa Bay (14-5), which is seeking the second championship in franchise history. Kansas City is a three-point favorite in the latest Chiefs vs. Buccaneers odds from William Hill Sportsbook, while the over-under has dropped to 56. Before locking in any Buccaneers vs. Chiefs picks, see the latest NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine's proven model.
The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,900 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception five-plus years ago. It is a sizzling 24-14 on top-rated NFL picks this season, returning well over $800. The model also enters Championship Weekend in the 2021 NFL Playoffs on an incredible 120-78 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season.
The model ranked in the Top 10 on NFLPickWatch three of the past four years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 95 percent of CBS Sports office pool players three times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.
Now, the model has set its sights on Chiefs vs. Bucs in the Super Bowl 2021. You can head to SportsLine to see its picks. Now, here are the latest NFL odds and trends for Bucs vs. Chiefs:
    Why the Chiefs can cover.
Kansas City was among the top offensive teams during the regular season, ranking first in total offense (415.8 yards) and passing offense (320), all while finishing sixth in scoring. The Chiefs also have been effective in the 2021 NFL Playoffs, as they're third in total offense (438.5 yards), second in passing (320) and fourth in scoring (30 points).
They've also been stout on the other side of the ball. Frank Clark has registered a pair of sacks in two contests after notching only six during the regular season. The 27-year-old defensive end also came up big during the Chiefs' championship run last year by recording five sacks in three playoff games. Rookie safety L'Jarius Sneed also has two sacks this postseason and will be ready to blitz Brady, as he has cleared the concussion protocol after being injured against Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game.
    Why the Buccaneers can cover.
With nine previous Super Bowl appearances, it's no surprise that Brady owns a number of the event's all-time records. The 43-year-old has amassed 2,838 passing yards, 18 touchdown tosses and owns the top two single-game yardage totals (505 in Super Bowl LII, 466 in Super Bowl LI). Brady will join Manning, Craig Morton and Kurt Warner as the only quarterbacks to start a Super Bowl for two different teams and can become the first to record a victory in three separate decades.
Brady has spread the wealth this postseason, throwing touchdown passes to six different players. Mike Evans, who was fourth in the NFL with a career-high 13 scoring receptions during the regular season, is the only member of the Buccaneers with multiple TD catches (two) and one of four to reach double-digit receptions (10).
Fellow wideout Chris Godwin leads Tampa Bay with 223 receiving yards and is tied for most catches (14) with running back Leonard Fournette, who has hauled in a TD pass while also running for 211 yards and a pair of scores.
How to make Chiefs vs. Buccaneers picks.
SportsLine's model is leaning under based on the latest 2021 Super Bowl odds, with the simulations showing the teams combining for 56 points. The model also says one side of the spread has all the value. You can only see which side to back here.

    NFL odds guide.
What do NFL odds look like?
There are three common NFL betting lines: the side, total and moneyline.
Side: The side refers to the point spread. While the odds can fluctuate, most sides are -110, meaning you have to bet $110 to win $100.
In that example, the Cowboys are a 7-point favorite and must win by more than 7 to win the bet. If the game ends with a 7-point Cowboys win, the bet is a push and you get your money back.
Total: The total also generally has -110 odds on each side. The sportsbook sets a line, such as 48.5, and bettors decide whether the game will go over or under that total.
Moneyline: The moneyline removes the point spread. Bettors take a team to win straight up.
In this example, a bettor must lay $200 to win $100 on the Packers. A $100 bet on the Bears would win $180, but Chicago has to win straight up.
Are there extra bets for big games like the Super Bowl?
Sportsbooks will offer proposition bets, or “props,” on big games. Props are famously associated with Super Bowl betting.
For the Super Bowl there are prop bets on many different things, like which player will score the first touchdown and even the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach. A common prop bet is on yards for specific players, such as “Tom Brady over/under 305.5 passing yards.”

The wait for Michigan online sports betting, casino gaming and real-money poker is in its final days.
The date and initial operator list for Michigan’s long-awaited online gaming launch will be announced by Jan. 18 at the latest, said Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm at a meeting Tuesday. Assuming all approvals are met, Michigan residents and visitors will be able to deposit and wager with the first wave of online operators by the end of the month.
“We’re very close. I wish I could give an exact day and time, but each day that changes,” Kalm said. “We’re gathering information daily. So we’re very close. That’s the best answer I can give right now.”
After more than a year of waiting, Michigan’s online sports betting launch appears it will be ready to go before the Feb. 7 kickoff to this year’s Super Bowl, historically the single highest-grossing event for U.S. sportsbooks.
    Michigan Launch Comes into Focus.
Though officials at Tuesday’s board meeting wouldn’t disclose publicly the go live date or initial approved operators, a timeline for online gaming in Michigan is coming into focus.
After MGCB officials grant the go live date, which could come in the next few days, it will still be four or five additional days after that until the first operators can accept bets, Kalm said, during which time mobile operators must pass final testing and certification. Michigan’s 2019 sports betting law also requires at least one of the state’s commercial casinos and one of its Native American casinos earn their respective online wagering licenses before betting can begin.
Kalm reaffirmed Tuesday the exact timeline remains in flux, but that should still allow the first bets to be placed before the end of January.
In the meantime, Michigan bettors can begin downloading sportsbook and iGaming apps ahead of the launch. Michigan’s three commercial casinos along with a dozen tribal casinos have already formalized online sports betting and iGaming partnerships.
Partner operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Barstool Sports, PointsBet and William Hill are among the dozen or so sportsbooks expected to go live on or near the official launch date. Retail sports betting began in March 2020, but multiple casino closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have handicapped wagering options and fueled interest in the online launch, which is projected to make up as 90% or more of total betting handle.
The 10th-largest state by population, Michigan is set to be one of the largest sports betting markets in the country. It will be the second most populated state with both online sports betting and iGaming, trailing only Pennsylvania.
    Long Rollout Nears Conclusion.
Signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in December 2019, Michigan’s package of online sports betting, poker, iGaming and daily fantasy regulations underwent more than a year of review, rulemaking and certification. Michigan regulators were required by state law to craft rules, take public comment, submit a financial impact statement and receive final sign off from a state legislative body, a process that wasn’t completed until last month.
Kalm said officials turned around the required gaming rules faster than any other set of regulations in his 13 years with the MGCB. Officials also expedited occupational, vendor and supplier licenses, a process Kalm said still took significant time as officials had to not only write and earn certification for their proposed rules, but then license three commercial and 12 tribal gaming operators as well as their affiliates and partners.

GO TIME: Online Casinos, Sports Betting Live in Michigan Jan. 22; Poker Not Yet Launching.
While Michigan won’t be launching online poker right away, sports betting and real money online casinos are set to launch Friday . On Tuesday, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) authorized nine operators to go live on Jan. 22 at noon.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board and the state’s commercial and tribal casinos will begin a new era Jan. 22 with the launch of regulated online gaming and sports betting,” MGCB executive director Richard S. Kalm said in a news release.
“Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos. Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.”
No poker yet, but online gaming may pave the way.
Michigan officially legalized online poker, online casinos and sports betting in 2019. So far, PokerStars and Roar Digital/MGM (which runs partypoker US Network ) have been approved in the state.
The good news for poker players is that online casinos in Michigan will at least launch this week. Also, Kalm noted recently that he didn’t expect online poker sites in Michigan to see a significant delay.
Many Pennsylvania online poker players were left frustrated after a lengthy delay between iGaming launch and online poker. The Michigan online operators authorized to begin online gaming on Jan. 22 include:
Tribe/casino Associated platform provider Gaming types offered on Jan. 22 MGM Grand Detroit BetMGM/Roar Digital Casino games; sports betting Bay Mills Indian Community DraftKings Casino games; sports betting Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians William Hill Casino games; sports betting Greektown Casino Penn Sports Interactive/Barstool Sportsbook Sports betting Hannahville Indian Community TwinSpires Casino games; sports betting Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Golden Nugget Online Gaming Casino games; sports betting Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Rush Street Casino games; sports betting MotorCity Casino FanDuel Casino games; sports betting Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Wynn Casino games; sports betting.
    Closing in on launch date.
MGCB officials noted the days between authorization and launch give operators additional time for testing and adjustments before going live.
The MGCB expects to authorize additional operators and platform providers in the coming days and weeks. Agency staff members continue reviewing other submissions to ensure they meet state regulatory requirements .
“We want the public to have confidence when they place wagers,” Kalm said, “and our agency has required the providers to prove they meet Michigan’s standards, which are designed to protect the participants.”
An MGCB spokesperson told USPoker that the board “has approved online poker games at the request of various platform providers. Operators and platform providers will decide which games they will present at launch.”
Despite that, there has been no timeline for a partypoker launch in the state. The MGCB also provisionally approved PokerStars as well. However, the operator is not among those with the initial go-ahead.
Poker fans may be in waiting mode, but a launch at least appears in sight – just not on Jan. 22.

п»їCollege Football Odds, Betting Lines and Point Spreads.
Compare College Football Odds, lines and point spreads from Vegas style sports books daily. Odds and lines explaintions for all of tonights games below.
Check back during the season for odds, lines and point spreads.
    COLLEGE FOOTBALL POINT SPREADS EXPLAINED:
While the NFL is the most wagered upon sport in North America, college football is the most exciting brand of football you can watch on TV. The passion these kids play with is second to none and the century old rivalries amongst some of college's elite programs makes that one game a season sometime mean so much more than a national title. Since Michigan is generally out of the CFP discussion by November, there game against Ohio State is the be all and end all of their season. Michigan wants to beat Ohio State so badly, that some of the fan base would be considered there season a success if that's the only marquee win on the schedule.
If you don't know some of the history of college football, I suggest looking into it. If you are like everyone else who reads this piece and want to understand how to bet on the basic college football options, you can keep reading. If you are a little more seasoned, you can skip down to the advanced wagering options by clicking here. If you want to know how to lay a few bets down on the futures market, I suggest you click here.
Betting on the Money Line in College Football.
As a concept, this is the simplest wager you can make on any game in any sport. The money line betting option allows you to place a bet on the team you think is simply going to win the game. In college, this bet includes overtime. Unlike the NFL, college football games cannot end in a tie due to their overtime format.
The money line betting odds correlate to the listed point spread. In this example, Alabama are the favorites and you must wager $450 dollars to turn a profit of $100. If you are a homer or love betting on the underdog, the Wildcats will return you $300 for every $100 you wager on them if they pull off the upset.
    Betting on the Point Spread.
Regardless of if I am talking about the NFL, CFL, NCAA, Arena League or upcoming XFL, the point spread is the most popular wagering option for bettors who love to test football betting skills. The point spread is an indication of which team is the favorite and underdog heading into their matchup.
When looking over betting options for the college football, you will come across lines that look like the following:
Depending on which side you select, your team must "cover the spread" in order for your wager to be graded a winner.
If you decided to wager on Alabama as -7.5-point favorites, they must win by eight or more points in order for wager to be graded as a winner.
One thing to keep in mind when betting on the point spread is that the point spread moves up or down depending on how much action a certain side is receiving. If you are able to lock in your bet at -7.5 and the line goes down to -5.5, your ticket would only be a winner if your team won by eight or more points. If they won six or seven, they would have beat the closing spread of -5.5, but your odds are locked in from the time your ticket is printed or you click place bet.
    Betting Game Totals.
Despite being classified as the same sport, NFL and college football totals are apples and oranges. In college, it's easy to spot the teams that play absolutely zero defense. The scores from their games are typically in the 70's/80's on a consistent basis. In the NFL, there were only a handful of games that games that reached those totals. College football is more receptive to the spread offense, which is why sportsbooks have no choice but to inflate totals to try and cover their own butts.
Let's look at an example of a game total:
    Texas Tech Red Raiders/Oklahoma Sooners – "Over" 78.5 -110, "Under" 78.5 -110.
If you bet the "over" 78.5, there must be a total of 79 points or more scored in the game in order for you to be a winner. If there are 78 or fewer points scored, then those who bet on the "under" will cash their tickets.
If totals are whole numbers such as 78 or 80 and the total happens to land exactly on the number, your bet, regardless whether it's an "over" or "under" bet, will be graded as a push and your money will be returned to you.
    Advanced College Football Wagering Options.
Advanced wagering options in college football are nearly identical to those of the NFL. The only thing you will not find in a sportsbook in relation to college football is the "First Touchdown Scorer or Anytime Touchdown Scorer" market. Below are some of the more popular wagering options.
This works almost exactly like the game total, but revolves around one team instead of both. With the "team total" wagering option, you are essentially betting on whether you think Team X will score more or less than the line given out by the sportsbooks.
Texas Tech Team Total: "Over" 35.5 -110, "Under" 35.5 -110.
In this case you have two options. You can bet them to score 36 or more points or 35 or fewer. The decision is ultimately up to you. This bet also includes overtime, unless otherwise stated in the betting rules provided by your sportsbook of choice.
    First Half Spread.
The "first half spread" betting option is a trickier form of betting the full-game point spread. This option takes into account the score at half time in order to determine a winner. The first half spread is usually half of what the full game spread is.
Depending on what side you are on, the score going into half time is what is used to determine a winner. If the score is 31-21 in favor of Alabama, bettors holding an Alabama -3.5 1H ticket are winners since they were able to cover the -3.5- first-half spread.
As I mentioned above, the first half point spread is typically half of what the full game line is.
There are only a handful of sportsbooks that offer up player props in college football, but they are nowhere near as extensive as the NFL player props. Typically, there will be props offered on one or two superstars per team and the lines will typically be inflated depending on who is playing.
Jalen Hurts: "Over" 18.5 completions -110, "Under" 18.5 completions -110 Nick Chubb: "Over" 74.5 rushing yards -110, "Under" 74.5 rushing yards -110 Calvin Ridley: "Over" 4.5 receptions -110, "Under" 4.5 receptions -110.
For each of these three player prop options, each player must go "over" or "under" the posted line. If you think Hurts will complete at least 19 passes, you would take the "over". If you think Ridley will be held to four or fewer catches, you would bet the "under".
A futures bet is a wager placed in the time leading up to the start of the event on a team or player that you believe is going to win their respective competition. Heading into the 2018/19 College Football season, the CFP futures odds look like this:
In order for you to successfully cash your ticket, you must correctly choose the team that will hoist the CFP trophy at the conclusion of next year's College Football Playoffs.
    Team Win Totals.
This is another popular type of futures bet amongst pro handicappers. The concept is straight forward. Every sportsbook will put out a "win total" for every team long before the season begins. Handicappers must simply decide whether they believe that team will exceed the posted win total or fall short of it.
Alabama Crimson Tide Win Total: "Over" 11.5 wins -110, "Under" 11.5 wins -110.
If Alabama wins at least 12 games, the "over" would cash. If they win 11 or fewer, the "under" would cash.

Super Bowl LV Betting Odds and Line Movement: What are Bettors Targeting in Early Wagering?
The best betting time of the entire NFL season has finally arrived as sportsbooks around the country have released their packets of Super Bowl Proposition wagers. Historically, Proposition bets make up nearly 60-percent or more of the entire handle on the Super Bowl. Think about that! The game itself only witnesses 40-percent or more of spread or total attention, with sports bettors instead allured by wagers ranging from the final time of the national anthem, to the actual color of the final Gatorade bath! There are literally over 1,000 proposition wagers being offered by DraftKings Sportsbook on Super Bowl LV.
The sharp information from Vegas Whispers , produced another profitable NFL betting campaign - finishing the regular season with a record of 68-47-1 ATS. Including the playoffs, the information from Sin City has a solid record of 71-53-1 ATS. The betting plays, supplied by Sports Illustrated’s Gambling Insider Frankie Taddeo, involve plays from the NFL, NCAA basketball and college football, NHL and MLB wagering. Be sure to be on the look-out for the Vegas Whispers Super Bowl sharp player proposition wagers later this week as we head up to kickoff on Sunday!

    Super Bowl LV Opening Odds.
Kansas City (15-2 SU, 7-10 ATS) vs Tampa Bay (14-5 SU, 11-8 ATS)
    Total : 56.5 – Over: (-110) | Under: 56.5 (-110)
    Game Info : February 7, 2020 6:30 pm ET / 3:30 pm PT | CBS.
According to my sources in Vegas, we are witnessing reverse steam in early wagering on Super Bowl LV. Despite nearly 73-percent of money being wagered on Kansas City - the oddsmakers have adjusted the line in the opposite direction of total money moving the Chiefs from 3.5-point favorites down to only 3-point favorites. The same action is being witnessed in the total market where nearly 77-percent of the money has arrived on the over - which soared as high as 57.5 in Vegas - only to now see a number of 56.5 at DraftKings Sportsbook. This could all easily change once we arrive at kickoff on Sunday.
Let’s dive into the proposition wagers that have seen the most early action!
    Super Bowl MVP Market.
    Position Total.
    Quarterback 30 Running back 7 Wide receiver 7 Linebacker 4 Defensive end 2 Safety 2 Cornerback 1 Defensive tackle 1 Kick returner/punt returner 1.
Brady UNDER 0.5 rushing yards (-165)
Note: Should Tampa Bay win Super Bowl LV and go into a victory formation, kneel downs count as “negative yards” in rushing totals.
Team To Record First Sack (Tampa Bay -155)
The possibility the Chiefs could experience issues with their blitz protection, due to the loss of star tackle Eric Fisher, is not going unnoticed by bettors. Fisher will miss Super Bowl LV after tearing his Achilles tendon in the AFC championship win over the Buffalo Bills. The former No. 1 overall draft pick was a vital part of protecting Mahomes while being instrumental in the team’s ability to post prolific offensive numbers both in the air and on the ground.
Tampa Bay has a strong defensive line led by Jason-Pierre Paul and Shaquil Barrett. Bettors are backing that the Buccaneers (-155), whose defense has forced seven turnovers and recorded seven sacks in three playoff wins, will record the first sack in Super Bowl LV. In the NFC Championship game Tampa Bay sacked Aaron Rodgers five times - led by Barrett who sacked the likely 2020 League MVP three times.
Total Punts In Game (6.5) UNDER -143.
Early action from bettors has also focused on the punting game (or lack thereof) in Super Bowl LV. Bettors are banking on two teams with strong offenses establishing long drives that will result in long scoring drives as the line for total punts (6.5) which opened at odds of -110 now stands with juice of -143 to the ‘Under.' In the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs did not attempt a punt while in their Divisional win over Cleveland punter Tommy Townsend only attempted one punt.
On the side of the ball, Tampa Bay only recorded two punts in the NFC Championship Game, after posting four against New Orleans in the Divisional Round and three against Washington in the wildcard round. Bettors are banking on Kansas City and Tampa Bay moving the ball efficiently combined with aggressive play-calling that could lead to more fourth-down attempts further limiting the overall punts in Super Bowl LV.
Player to have Most Receiving Yards (L. Fournette -152 vs C. Edwards-Helaire)

A NFL money line wager means you’re simply picking a side. The betting term Against the Spread (ATS) is not necessary for these types of wagers since the spread is not a factor.

That number is set by oddsmakers after the spread is established but changes throughout the week based on the amount of money coming in on bets.
However, going for it all by taking underdogs on the Money Line instead of taking the points turns out to be a tough pill to swallow.
Washington actually led this game, 20-7 at halftime, but was outscored, 25-7 in the second half to lose to Philadelphia , 32-27. If you took the points with Washington, you were a winner. However, if you backed Washington on the Money Line, you walk away with nothing as it lost the game straight-up.
